Kelly's Heroes

One of the great WWII Movies of all time, Kelly's heroes is a fun and action packed movie that's been a longtime favorite of ours. This movie is a bit different than other WWII Movies, as a comedy drama, or "Caper" picture Kelly's Heroes has many elements that set it apart from other late 1960's European made WWII films, many of which are and were "B" Movies. Some of the elements that make this film a cut above are first and foremost, the cast. great acting from all the major players, and many of the Platoon GI's have great acting credits, like Stuart Margolin, Gavin Mc Cloud, Harry Dean Stanton, and Caroll O'Connor. The Next element that makes the film so watch-able is the scale. This movie takes full advantage of the Yugoslavian Army which had all the Helmets, Uniforms, and much WWII era equipment, like the Sherman Tanks used in the Movie, AND all those lovely MG-42's (Yugo M53's). So now you have a movie with a great cast, a fun plot, and lots of well equipped extras. With is notable also in the way of equipment are the three Tiger Tanks used in the movie. Actually T-34's made to look like Tigers, they look fantastic, and another level or realism to the movie. Remember most movies of the era used Patton Tanks painted in German colors....it just looks funny. Then there are 2 other elements to this film that are oft overlooked. One is the direction, and camera angles that really highlight the small arms operation. Look for the over the barrel shots of the BAR and the M1 Rifle Grenade. Awesome. The Final element in the movie is the set itself. This movie was filmed in Croatia (Then Yugoslavia) the town of Vižinada filed in for France quite nicely, and parts of the town were actually blown up. Nothing looks more like real explosions, than real explosions. No digital effects here! Anyway, great movie, and one of those movies you can watch over and over.

The Big Red One

Samuel Fuller's valedictory war picture, The Big Red One follows the First Infantry Division from Africa to Europe during the years 1942 through 1945. Lee Marvin portrays the division sergeant; he's tough and experienced, to be sure, but he takes on his job with cool professionalism rather than Hollywood bravado. Based on Fuller's own experiences, the film is a loosely constructed series of anecdotes. Among them are an insane asylum under bombardment while the inmates applaud. Stark and unflinching, Lee Marvin at his best.

VICTORY AT SEA

Ask your father or grandfather if they recall watching Victory at Sea when it first appeared on NBC in 1952-53, and a fond look will likely appear in their eyes. This is THE original, landmark documentary series - the first ever made for television. NBC set out to document the entire second World War, focusing on the effects of naval warfare on the war's outcome. The network sent its researchers all over the globe, to obtain original battle and historical footage from every source possible, including sources in the U.S. Navy and both Japan and Germany. More than 13,000 hours of film was recovered (some 11,000 miles worth in all). From this, 26 half-hour episodes were crafted to depict the war's many turns and twists. Narrated by actor Leonard Graves, and featuring an orchestral score by Broadway composer Richard Rodgers (of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame), Victory at Sea is deserving of the many accolades with which it has been showered. History doesn't get more accessible than this. One of the things that makes this documentary series so interesting, is that it features literally hours of combat footage that you've likely never seen before. There's some really amazing stuff here. Unfortunately, the only real strike against Victory at Sea is that it also employs Hollywood film footage and special effects footage, intermingled with real combat footage, to depict (or flesh out the depiction of) some events. Still, this one small issue aside, the footage is so effectively edited, the narration is so eloquently written and delivered, and the music is so perfectly suited to the imagery, that you are immediately drawn into the material. I was struck by the tension in the third episode - Sealing the Breach - as a lonely and vulnerable convoy of supply ships is steaming across the Atlantic, trudging along through thick night fog in the hope of evading U-boat attack. It's been years since I've seen this series, and it really is great viewing. THIS IS THE COMPLETE COLLECTION>>>NOT ONE OR TWO CHAPTERS>>>THE WHOLE SET!! WE HAVE SEEN THESE SELL FOR AS MUCH AS 80.00.....STEAL yours from KAR at less than 20 bucks delivered!

4 pack The Dirty Dozen, Kelly's heroes, Battleground!, and Where Eagles Dare

...."Off your cots and grab your socks!"...Well, that's how they said it in Battleground!..Okedoke, here's the deal. Normally, when two or more movies are coupled together, they stick one clunker in there just to move the title. This is a 4 pack, however, all four movies are WINNERS! Kelly's heroes, awesome, see write-up above. Where Eagles Dare, More Clint Eastwood and Richard Burton is a magnificently crafted spy mystery. The Dirty Dozen....Does this even need description? So often copied, but never equaled. Let's look at the cast, I think that's all that need be said: Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Robert Ryan, Donald Sutherland, Trini Lopez, Jim Brown, Telly Sevallas, Charles Bronson, Clint Walker, the ubiquitous Richard Jaeckel, George Kennedy, and the incomprable John Cassevetes as Victor Francko......WOW!...Then, there's Battleground! Battleground Stars Van Johnson, Marshall Thompson, Ricardo Montalbán , James Whitmore and more. Filmed in 1949, it won 2 Oscars, and garnered three more nominations. This movie is a KAR Favorite, one we grew up with, and simply put a damn good movie. This really is a great deal.

To Hell and Back

The highly variable Audie Murphy delivers his best screen performance as "himself" in Universal's To Hell and Back. Based on the star's autobiography, this is the story of how Murphy became America's most-decorated soldier during WW II. After dwelling a bit on Murphy's hard-scrabble Texas upbringing, the story moves ahead to 1942, when, as a teenager, Audie joined the army. Within a year, he was a member of the 7th Army, serving in North Africa, Italy, France and ultimately Germany and Austria. One by one, the members of Murphy's Company B are killed in the war, until only three men from the original company are left (the others appear at the finale as ghostly images, a standard visual cliche of 1950s war films). The bulk of the film is given over to Murphy's conspicuous acts of combat bravery, and his killing of 240 enemy soldiers. Highlighted by excellent battle sequences, To Hell and Back is a serviceable tribute to a most complex individual

Operation Valkryie (2004)

In 1944, a group of high command officers plot an attempt against Hitler, and one of the leaders of the conspiracy, Stauffenberg, goes to a meeting with the Fuhrer in charge of exploding the place. However, Hitler survives and the officers are executed. Director: Jo Baier. Stars: Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others). Originally released three years before Tom Cruise’s take on the incident in the Hollywood film VALKYRIE, this thrilling historical drama details the events leading up to one of the most prominent assassination attempts of Adolph Hitler by his own soldiers. Sebastian Koch (BLACK BOOK) stars as Claus von Stauffenberg, the spirited leader of the well-organized but unfortunately flawed conspiracy. This movie was made in German, and is expertly dubbed in English.
